Howdy! Hope your weekend is going well. Thought I'd take a quick break from all the football action with a quick post about making the best of a can (or in my case a cardboard container) of soup.
Why settle for the mediocre taste that comes out of the can - spice it up a little! Here are my top four ways to make canned soup taste like homemade soup.
1. Heat it on the stove.
2. Mix in additional ingredients.
3. Add some spices.
4. Top it off!
What is your favorite way to spruce up a can of soup? I'm always looking for new combinations :)
Why settle for the mediocre taste that comes out of the can - spice it up a little! Here are my top four ways to make canned soup taste like homemade soup.
1. Heat it on the stove.
- Soup always tastes better on the stove. I don't know why - but I don't think I'm imagining it. If you have access to a stove, use it! It takes pretty much the same amount of time as the microwave but you end up with a more evenly heated, smoother, tastier end result.
2. Mix in additional ingredients.
- What's better than a creamy bisque soup? A creamy bisque soup with goodies in it! but, even already chunky soup can benefit form additional mix-ins. Add in rice, pasta, potatoes, leftover meat or veggies. To my bowl of sweet potato tomatillo bisque I added some leftover cooked diced potatoes and ground turkey.
3. Add some spices.
- Sometimes canned soup can be a little bland. Do not add more salt! There's pretty much always tons of that already. But other spices and herbs like black pepper, thyme, rosemary, garlic, or paprika can really help spruce up the flavor. As you can see in the picture above, I added some freshly cracked black pepper.
4. Top it off!
- This is the most fun step. Add fun toppings to your soup. Some of my favorites are avocado, sour cream, shredded cheese, diced onion, or croutons. I chose garlic cheese flavored croutons for my bowl above.
- Eating chicken noodle soup? Make it amazing by adding fresh squeezed lime juice, shredded lettuce, and avocado. Trust me - it is delicious!
- Creamier soups usually taste great with croutons or crackers. Green onion is also a tasty addition.
- Spicy soups are great with a dollop of sour cream or some shredded cheddar cheese.
- Broth-y soups or veggie based soups are good with avocado, cheese, or even bacon crumbles.
